At the same time as desperately needing the things that are being donated, there has to be an equal effort to make long-term plans WITH a country, not for it. That's why it's important that, as volunteers, we don't forget that our everyday small-scale educational demonstrations and cross-cultural exchange is just as important as the large-scale secondary projects we do ... it's easy to fall into the pattern of tracking 'success' by tangible events and results, but these things often take years to affect and we'll hardly see those affects anytime soon.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01237354227201263961noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8535605196509844105.post-90741417022482967872010-08-09T07:45:12.924-06:002010-08-09T07:45:12.924-06:00Damn. I also get into that mental turmoil of the "gift-giving" that you mentioned, if there is something going on, a cause perhaps, I feel I just need to do something for yet can only do money donations. I really wonder if I should even because hell, the money most likely is not going where I intend it to. anyway thanks for posting your opinion on this, it makes me not so shy of mine. The next time we have a meeting about whole foods foundations reaching out I will definetly push answers about the long term effect :)sandrine!noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8535605196509844105.post-46671427536811000052010-08-08T17:24:34.335-06:002010-08-08T17:24:34.335-06:00"African societies face problems deeper than ..."African societies face problems deeper than their dependence on aid. Divided by ethnic loyalties, they are too large to be nations. Yet with only tiny economies, they lack the scale to be effective states. As a result the vital public goods of security and accountability cannot adequately be provided. In their absence the valuable natural assets that many countries possess become liabilities instead of opportunities for prosperity.

I think that African societies need international help to overcome these problems; it is just that the help they need is not predominantly money. Aid is not a very potent instrument for enhancing either security or accountability. Our obsession with it has detracted from the more important ways in which we can promote development: peacekeeping, security guarantees, trade privileges, and governance."

Copied from a review of Dead Aid by:

Paul Collier.
Professor of Economics at Oxford UniversityAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8535605196509844105.post-5521820427764541612010-08-08T17:11:53.414-06:002010-08-08T17:11:53.414-06:00Well posted, there seems to be a great deal of deb...Well posted, there seems to be a great deal of debate right now about this same issue. What we see as important is not exactly what other people in other countries see, therefore we must remember NOT to force feed our culture upon others and dictate under the flag of right vs wrong.Mumma Reppnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8535605196509844105.post-12899602519264569912010-08-08T16:31:45.074-06:002010-08-08T16:31:45.074-06:00Dennis linked your blog and I agree with what you ...Dennis linked your blog and I agree with what you are saying. I recently joined Rotary and they are recognizing the same issues you are talking about. Which is sustainability in projects. Also, recently saw a book called Dead Aid which talks about how throwing money at a situation isn't actually helping.Scott D.
